Australian
mountaineer Mike Rheinberger had many successful climbs
in the Himalayan Mountains, including the west face of
Makalu and Broad Peak. However, there was one mountain
he became obsessed with, Everest. When he finally
reached the summit in 1994 he paid with his life during
the descent.
Mike’s obsession for Everest
went on for more then a decade; he made 8 summit attempts before reaching the
top in 1994. He had exercised good judgment in the past always turning back in
compromising weather, or late in the day. In 1994, he pushed on and persevered
up the North Ridge despite the late hour. He reached the summit just before
dark, he was exhausted. Mike spent the night on the summit and by morning was
too sick to climb down. Mike was the oldest Australian to climb Everest at age
53 on May 26, 1994.
