EverestHistory.com: Dan Reid

On October 9, 1983 Dan Reid along with fellow Americans George Lowe and Jay Cassell stood atop the world's tallest mountain. They had just completed a grueling five and a half week assault on Everest's unclimbed Eastern (or Kangshung) Face including a harrowing 28 days climb of a crumbling 3,500 foot rock and ice wall known as Lowe's Buttress. The climb saw six successful summits though their joy at their success was dampened by the falling deaths of two Japanese climbers and a sherpa from another nearby expedition.

Reid was part of the 1981 unsuccessful American attempt at the summit. During that climb a particularly difficult pitch, which they climbed after Reid fell and climbed again, became known as Reid's Nemesis. Reid would return to the crumbling wall and suffer three more falls before finally conquering the pitch.

The Northern California Chapter of The Explorers Club sponsors The Dan Reid Memorial Exploration Grant in memory of Dan Reid and his wife who were killed while climbing.

In 1991 the MT. Diablo Hospital Foundation (Concord, CA) presented its annual award to Heart Surgeon Reid and his wife Barbara in recognition of their enduring energy, enthusiasm and good works.
